Tech Tip: Moving Tests from One LMS to Another

It’s surprising how often there is a need to move an assessment from one learning management system to another. An instructor moves to a university that uses a different learning system, or teaches at two different universities. A university switches to a different learning management system, or has multiple systems on campus. Then there is the instructor who wants to share an assessment with someone at a different institution. The list goes on.

Respondus 4.0 easily handles the migration of assessments from one LMS to another. And it’s simple enough for instructors to do themselves. In the following example, we show how to move an assessment that resides in an ANGEL course to a Blackboard Learn course. (The same approach is used to move assessments to / from other learning management systems.)

  1. From the “Start” tab in Respondus 4, select the learning management system where the assessment resides. For example, if the assessment is in an ANGEL course, select that from the pull-down list.

  3. Then select the “Retrieval” or “Retrieval & Reports” tab (the tab name will vary, depending on the LMS).
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions for selecting the LMS server, the course, and the assessment. You’ll also need to provide a name for the assessment being “retrieved” from the server.
  5. Once the assessment is retrieved, return to the Start tab in Respondus 4 and select the learning management system (using the pull-down list) where the assessment will be published. At this point you will likely receive a message indicating that the assessment was created for a different learning system and will be converted to the new format. Click OK to continue.

  7. A second window will appear, providing details of anything that was modified during the conversion process. This might include changing point values to whole numbers, how feedback is handled, or question types that aren’t compatible in the new LMS. In some situations, you’ll have the choice of how certain items are converted.

  9. Save the converted assessment as a new file, or replace your current file, whichever you prefer.

The assessment is now converted. To publish the assessment to the new LMS, select the “Preview and Publish” tab and follow the steps in the Publish Wizard.
